Social Lens

Connect. Collaborate. Inspire.

Relationships Come First

Using AI socially means remembering that technology should help us work better with people, not avoid them.

AI can help us communicate more clearly, collaborate more effectively, understand different perspectives, and share knowledge more easily. It can support teamwork, strengthen communication, and help people solve problems together.

The Social Lens reminds us that while AI can assist conversations, relationships are built between people.

The goal is not simply to improve productivity. The goal is to strengthen connection, collaboration, and contribution. AI may help us communicate. But people create understanding.

Three Reflection Questions

1

Did I Connect More Clearly?

Did my use of AI help me communicate more clearly or effectively with others?

2

Did I Collaborate Better?

Did my use of AI help me work more successfully with other people?

3

Did I Encourage Others?

Did my use of AI help someone else feel supported, included, or able to contribute?

How to Use AI Socially

Practice 1 · Consider Who Else Matters

Before acting on an AI-generated suggestion, ask:

"Who else might benefit from being part of this conversation?"

Practice 2 · Improve Communication

Use AI to help make messages clearer, more respectful, and easier to understand. Good communication strengthens relationships.

Practice 3 · Explore Different Perspectives

When facing disagreement or uncertainty, ask:

"How might someone else see this situation?"

Understanding often begins with perspective-taking.

Practice 4 · Share What You Learn

When AI helps you discover something useful, share it with others and encourage them to share what they know too. Knowledge grows when it is shared.

Healthy vs. Unhealthy Use

Socially Healthy

  • AI improves communication.
  • AI supports teamwork.
  • AI helps people understand one another.
  • AI encourages knowledge sharing.
  • Relationships remain important.

Socially Unhealthy

  • AI replaces meaningful conversations.
  • People become isolated.
  • Communication becomes less personal.
  • Collaboration decreases.
  • Technology becomes a substitute for human connection.

Seeing the Social Lens in Action

Student Example

A group of students is working on a project together.

A Useful Use of AI

The students use AI to organise ideas, divide tasks, and clarify the project requirements.

A Stronger Use — Through the Social Lens

The students use AI to support collaboration while actively discussing ideas, sharing perspectives, and making decisions together.

The goal is not simply to complete the project. The goal is to learn how to work effectively with others.
Workplace Example

A team is preparing a proposal for an important client.

A Useful Use of AI

The team uses AI to improve the structure of the proposal and identify areas that need further development.

A Stronger Use — Through the Social Lens

The team uses AI to support discussion, gather different viewpoints, and improve communication among team members throughout the project.

The goal is not simply to produce a better document. The goal is to strengthen collaboration and shared understanding.

We Flourish Through Connection

Human beings do not flourish alone. We learn through relationships. We grow through communities. We find meaning through our connection with others.

AI can help us communicate across languages, share knowledge across distances, and work together in new ways. Yet the Social Lens reminds us that technology should strengthen human relationships rather than replace them.

A message generated by AI may be perfectly written, but genuine understanding still requires people.

A virtual conversation may be efficient, but trust is built through human connection.

From a Bhutanese perspective, progress is not measured solely by individual achievement. It is also measured by the strength of our relationships, the health of our communities, and our willingness to support one another.

The Social Lens encourages us to use AI not simply to become more productive, but to become better collaborators, better neighbours, better teammates, and better citizens.

Technology may help us communicate. Only people can truly connect.
